Residing from Imo State in Nigeria is the female rapper who goes by the name Valerie. Not only is Valerie a rapper but she is also a singer and a songwriter. Unlike most known musicians, Valerie chose to use her real as her stage name, "Valerie is my real name. It was given to me by my mum or dad. They still argue about which one of them actually gave me the name. There aren’t many famous artists with the name Valerie so I thought to make a change" she said.
The female musician seems to have had the love for music since she was still a kid. When asked how long she has been doing music, her response was - "Since I was a kid, my neighbors never got any peace because of my constant singing. I wrote my first rap when I was 12 years old. I recorded my first single- Forever when I got out of high school in 2013". According to Valerie, her mom is her biggest motivation and fan but then she also has her her "gang", "And then there’s my gang. We don’t kill people, don’t get me wrong. We’re just a music loving family, don’t mess with us though. They encourage me and always got my back", Valerie explained.
Valarie looks up to several other musicians for different reasons, such as Selina Gomez, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello etc. "For starters, Selena Gomez is my role model, absolutely nobody has her vibe. She’s different, plus I grew up watching her every move. Ariana Grande and Camila Cabello inspire me a lot to work on my vocals, I believe they are the best singers of my generation. Wizkid made me give my country’s music a chance and he’s obviously the king. Nicki is my Queen and the reason I rap" said Valerie.
Upon the interview, we got a chance to ask the musician about her motivation towards her song "Oh My(Praise Him)" - "Well, to be honest I just downloaded the instrumental because I love the original song- Lose You To Love Me by Selena Gomez. I thought about how much God has blessed me and my family, how patient he has been with me. Jesus is my ride or die, sometimes a prayer isn’t enough for me, so I just call on him and we talk. But then I thought, how do I explain how grateful I am for everything he’s done? Let’s write him a whole ep. And Oh My turned out to be a favorite. Plus I had just listened to My Oh My by Camila Cabello ft DaBaby and I just thought, mm “my oh my”, Valerie stated.
Aside from doing music, Valerie listens to music and plans to venture into the business world, she says "I plan to venture into business but that means I have to go to school and I hate school. But I still gotta go cause what can I do? Just so we’re clear I graduated from Imo state University, Nigeria." The musician has worked with other talented artists such as Pohzitive, Kenny Kredible, Freshkid and producers like Vfrexh, Soundkraft.
